Growing Guide: Britton Shiso
Growing Tips
Also known as: Britton Shiso, Perilla, Beefsteak Plant, Japanese Basil
Plant Britton Shiso (Perilla frutescens var. crispa ‘Britton’) in full sun to light shade and provide moderately rich, well-draining soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during warm weather, without allowing it to become waterlogged. This fast-growing annual herb features green leaves with deep red-purple undersides and grows well in garden beds or containers. Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushier growth and delay flowering, and harvest fresh leaves throughout the growing season. Shiso readily self-seeds, so remove flower heads before seeds mature if you want to limit spreading.
