Rare Black Jewel Pomegranate with Deep Color & Rich Flavor

‘Kara Bala Miursal’ is one of the rarest and most sought-after pomegranate cultivars, originally hailing from the Caucasus region and Central Asia, where pomegranates have been revered for thousands of years. The name "Kara Bala" translates to "Black Baby" — a nod to its extraordinarily dark, almost black-skinned fruit and intensely colored arils. The flavor is complex: sweet, tangy, and rich, with a depth that sets it apart from standard varieties. This hardy, drought-tolerant shrub is perfect for collectors and gardeners looking for a unique and productive addition to their edible landscape, food forest, or permaculture design.

Why Grow Pomegranate 'Kara Bala Miursal'?

  • Produces extremely dark-skinned fruit with deep red-black arils
  • Sweet-tart, rich flavor highly prized by collectors and connoisseurs
  • Cold-hardy and drought-tolerant once established
  • Beautiful ornamental value with showy red-orange flowers
  • Excellent for fresh eating, juicing, preserving, and culinary use

Growing Tips

Plant Kara Bala Miursal in full sun for best fruit production. It thrives in well-drained, loamy to sandy soil and tolerates both alkaline and slightly acidic conditions. Water regularly while young; once established, it’s highly drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to encourage airflow, remove crossing branches, and promote larger fruit. In colder zones (as low as USDA Zone 7), some winter protection may be helpful during extreme cold snaps. This variety can be grown in containers where winters are harsh. Propagate by hardwood cuttings for best genetic consistency.

How to Grow Kara Bala Pomegranate Trees

Climate and Soil Requirements

  • Climate: Pomegranate ‘Kara Bala Miursal’ thrives in warm, dry climates and is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 7-11. It can tolerate both hot summers and mild winters, making it ideal for Mediterranean-like climates. The tree is drought-tolerant once established and can handle periods of dryness.
  • Soil: The tree prefers well-draining, loamy soil but can adapt to various soil types, including sandy or slightly alkaline soils. Pomegranates perform best in soil with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. Adding compost or organic matter improves soil fertility and structure.

Planting

  1. Location: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun is essential for optimal fruiting and healthy growth.
  2. Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil and mix in organic compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  3. Planting Time: Plant in spring or fall when temperatures are mild.
  4. Spacing: Space trees 10-15 feet apart to allow for their spreading canopy.

Watering

  • Low Water Needs: Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering. However, during fruiting, providing moderate watering can enhance fruit quality and yield.

Sunlight and Fertilizing

  • Full Sun: Ensure the tree receives full sun exposure for optimal fruit production. Lack of sunlight can result in reduced fruit size and yield.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and fruit production. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruiting.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Moderate Maintenance: Prune lightly to remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Thinning out some of the branches can improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, which promotes better fruiting.
  • Container Growing: ‘Kara Bala Miursal’ can be grown in large containers, making it suitable for small spaces. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the container has proper drainage.

Pest and Disease Management

  • Common Pests: The tree may attract aphids, scale, or mealybugs. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap to manage infestations.
  • Diseases: Ensure proper air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases like root rot or leaf spot. Pomegranates are generally disease-resistant, but good cultural practices help prevent issues.

Harvesting Kara Bala Miursal Pomegranates

When to Harvest:

  • The fruits are ready to harvest in late fall to early winter when the skin turns a deep red and the fruit feels heavy. The fruit should be harvested before the skin cracks to prevent spoilage.

How to Use:

  • The dark red to black arils can be eaten fresh, added to salads, or used to make juice, jams, or sauces. The high juice content and sweet-tart flavor make Kara Bala Miursal pomegranates ideal for fresh eating or culinary uses.

You guys need to re-word your sizing categories. It’s misleading. Be a little more forthcoming. I’ve purchased from yall several times, and have no complaints, but with so many people emerging on the market trying to be self sufficient; I think you should feature real pictures of real sizes from your nursery. Thank yall for your hard work, and i think yall could be a little more forthcoming in terms of pricing and the reality of the return on investment.
