Black Sapote (Diospyros digyna), also known as Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Zapote Negro, and Tropical Persimmon, is a tropical fruit tree prized for its extraordinary dessert-like fruit. This seedling-grown variety produces abundant, large green fruits that gradually turn muddy green on the outside and become dark brown, soft, and wonderfully creamy inside when fully ripe.
The thick, custardy flesh has a warm, fruity, cacao-like flavor that makes the fruit taste remarkably like chocolate pudding. Black Sapote is a fast-growing evergreen tree with glossy, dark green, leathery foliage and can reach 30–40 ft. in ideal conditions, though it can be pruned to maintain a more manageable size in home gardens. For the ultimate simple dessert, we love eating the ripe fruit fresh with a spoon.
