Fragrant Caribbean Spice Tree with Aromatic, Medicinal Leaves

Bay Rum, also known as West Indian Bay Tree, is a tropical evergreen tree with a rich cultural history and powerful aromatic leaves used to make the classic Bay Rum cologne—as well as teas, infusions, and herbal remedies. Native to the Caribbean and northern South America, this tree is a true multi-purpose gem, grown for its medicinal, culinary, and ornamental value.

Bay Rum’s glossy green leaves release a warm, spicy fragrance with notes of clove, cinnamon, and allspice—earning it a beloved place in island perfumery and wellness traditions. Traditionally, the leaves are distilled with rum to create the famous Bay Rum aftershave and tonic, and they’ve also been used for natural remedies supporting circulation, skin care, hair health, and cold relief.

This low-maintenance tropical grows into a shapely evergreen tree or large shrub, reaching 6–12 feet in gardens or containers. It thrives in full sun, loves warm weather, and responds well to pruning—making it perfect for hedges, edible landscapes, or fragrant garden borders.

If you longed for a scratch-and-sniff tree, the Bay Rum tree makes for a perfect pick!
