Spiny Tropical Hedge with Tart Fruit

Kei Apple (Dovyalis caffra) is a bold, resilient evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its small, golden-yellow fruits and dense, thorny growth. The round fruits have a sharp, tangy flavor with notes reminiscent of apricot and citrus, making them especially appealing to anyone who loves sour, punchy fruit. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, the fruit is commonly transformed into jams, jellies, sauces, or dried into a tart, chewy snack.

Native to southern Africa, Kei Apple grows quickly into a dense, protective barrier of spiny branches and glossy foliage. Its toughness, drought tolerance, and ability to adapt to poor or sandy soils make it an excellent choice for edible hedges, windbreaks, food forest borders, and wildlife-friendly landscapes. With its combination of thorny structure, ornamental foliage, and useful fruit, Kei Apple is a remarkably multifunctional plant.

Cultural & Culinary Significance

Kei Apple is native to southern Africa, where its tart fruit has long been valued as a useful food crop and preserved in a variety of ways. The intensely sour fruit is rarely eaten straight from the tree but shines when cooked down into jams, jellies, sauces, and preserves, where its natural acidity adds a bright, citrusy character. The fruit can also be dried for a chewy snack. Its dense, thorny growth has made the species valuable beyond the kitchen as a living barrier, hedge, and protective planting.

Why Grow Kei Apple?

  • Tart, Vitamin-Rich Fruit: Harvest golden fruit packed with vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Excellent Living Fence: Dense, thorny branches create a formidable natural barrier.
  • Fast Growing: Quickly develops into a substantial hedge or small tree.
  • Drought Tolerant: Handles dry conditions once established and adapts to poor or sandy soils.
  • Edible Landscape Workhorse: Combine fruit production, wind protection, wildlife habitat, and privacy in one plant.

Growing Tips

(Also known as: Kei Apple, Kei-Apple, Dovyalis caffra)

Kei Apple grows best in full sun and well-draining soil and is highly adaptable to sandy or poor soils. Water regularly while young, then reduce watering once established as the plant develops good drought tolerance. Feed during the growing season to encourage healthy growth and fruit production, and prune as needed to maintain a dense hedge or desired shape. Its sharp thorns make gloves and careful handling essential. Kei Apple is dioecious, so both a male and female plant are needed for fruit production. Plant them together for the best chance of a reliable harvest.
