Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
True Cardamom is considered one of the most valued spices in the world and is commonly referred to as the Queen of Spices. Cardamom is a perennial plant which spreads from it's fleshy root system. The spice known as cardamom is harvested from the plants dried fruit, or seeds. This delicious, warming spice is popular in Indian cuisine, but has myriad therapeutic properties. If you've ever had Garam Masala, you've tasted Cardamom's rich flavor and enjoyed it's soothing aroma.
Cardamom has very aesthetic and fragrant foliage, with flowers that form at the base of the plant. The white flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by fruit/seeds to be harvested in the fall. Flowering to harvest period is approximately 120 days.
