Florida–Caribbean Native with Glossy Leaves and Traditional Fermented Drink

Mavi, also known as Colubrina elliptica, is a beautiful evergreen shrub or small tree native to Florida, the Caribbean, and tropical coastal regions. It forms a dense, rounded canopy with smooth, glossy, deep green leaves and a refined branching structure that makes it naturally ornamental. Small clusters of pale yellow-green flowers bloom discreetly along the stems, followed by small dark fruits that feed birds and wildlife. In the landscape, Mavi is highly adaptable—thriving in sandy, coastal soils, tolerating drought and salt spray, and remaining lush year-round. Its bark is the plant’s best-known feature, aromatic and traditionally harvested for its flavor and tonic qualities.

Mavi grows slowly and gracefully, forming a long-lived native shrub that brings structure, shine, and resilience to tropical and subtropical gardens. It’s an excellent choice for Florida-friendly landscapes, edible forest edges, or native plant collections.

Cultural & Culinary Significance

Mavi (also spelled Mauby, Maví, Mawi) has deep cultural roots throughout the Caribbean and Florida’s coastal communities. The bark is traditionally used to make Mavi/Mauby drink, a fermented or simmered herbal beverage known for its earthy, spiced flavor and cooling properties. Enjoyed in Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Haiti, Cuba, and across the Lesser Antilles, Mavi is valued as both a refreshing drink and a restorative tonic. The plant has been used in folk medicine to support digestion, circulation, and overall wellness. Growing Mavi keeps this rich Caribbean heritage alive—right in your own garden.

Growing Tips
*(Also known as: Mavi, Mauby, Maví, Mawi, Soldierwood, Colubrina elliptica, Nakedwood, Coralwood) *

Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Mavi is highly tolerant of salt spray, drought, and coastal heat once established, making it excellent for seaside or xeric landscapes. Water regularly during the first season to establish roots; afterward, it requires minimal care. Prune lightly to shape or maintain as a small tree or dense shrub. Hardy in USDA Zones 10–11 (Zone 9b with protection). Slow to moderate growth. Can be grown in large containers in subtropical climates.

For traditional Mavi drink, bark is harvested sparingly from mature branches—never remove too much from one area to protect the plant’s health.
