Nutrient-Dense Superfruit

Common Names: Red Goji Berry, Wolfberry, Matrimony Vine
Family: Solanaceae
Origin: Asia (China, Tibet)

Red Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum), also known as Wolfberry, is a deciduous shrub prized for its nutrient-dense red berries, which have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The small, bright red berries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making them a popular superfood. Goji berries have a sweet and slightly tart flavor and can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in teas, smoothies, and cooking. The plant itself is hardy and drought-tolerant, growing well in a variety of climates and soil types, making it an excellent choice for both gardeners and health-conscious individuals looking to grow their own superfood.

Distinctive Features, Uses, and Nutritional Value

Fruits: Goji berries are small, oval-shaped, and bright red when ripe. They have a mildly sweet and tart flavor with a chewy texture. The berries are rich in antioxidants, particularly zeaxanthin, which supports eye health, along with vitamins A, C, and E. They are also a good source of fiber, iron, and protein, making them a powerhouse of nutrition.

Foliage: The plant has slender, lance-shaped green leaves that grow densely along its long, arching branches. The foliage is attractive and adds ornamental value to the plant.

Growth Habit: Red Goji Berry is a deciduous, woody shrub that typically grows 6-10 feet tall with a similar spread. It has a sprawling, vining growth habit and can be trained along a trellis or left to grow freely.

Culinary and Medicinal Uses

Goji berries are known for their health benefits and can be consumed in a variety of ways. They can be eaten fresh or dried, used in teas, added to smoothies, trail mixes, or used in baked goods. In traditional Chinese medicine, Goji berries are used to improve immune function, support eye health, boost energy, and promote longevity. Their high antioxidant content makes them a popular ingredient in many modern health foods and supplements.

    Chickens love this plant lol!

Here is my Goji berry after 10 months. If it hadn’t been for my chickens occasionally nipping off a leaf 🍃 here and then when sneaking into the garden, it would probably be a couple feet taller.

Now that this Goji is protected, it’s filling out nicely!
