Sweet Eggfruit Flavor in a Cold-Tolerant, High-Yielding Tree

Bruce Canistel (Pouteria campechiana 'Bruce') is a top-performing cultivar of the tropical eggfruit, prized for its rich, custardy texture and sweet flavor that tastes like pumpkin pie meets sweet potato. The Bruce variety is especially notable for its compact form, cold tolerance, and reliable fruit set in subtropical climates, making it a favorite among growers in Florida and beyond.

The fruit has a golden-yellow skin and deep orange flesh that’s dry, dense, and loaded with nutrition—often eaten fresh with a spoon, added to smoothies, or blended into vegan custards, pies, and ice cream. The tree is evergreen, fast-growing, and easy to maintain once established, thriving in full sun, well-drained soil, and warm, frost-free areas.

With its unique texture, tropical flavor, and seasonal beauty, Bruce Canistel is a must-have for rare fruit lovers, food forest builders, and anyone looking to grow something truly special.

Growing Tips

Plant Canistel in full sun for highest fruit production or part shade and provide well-draining, sandy soil rich in organic matter. Keep the soil consistently watered, especially during flowering and fruiting, but avoid flooding, as Canistel is completely intolerant of waterlogged conditions. Trees can reach 15–30 ft. but can be maintained at a smaller size in containers with adequate room for root growth. In colder climates, Canistel can be dwarfed and overwintered indoors with the right care. Harvest fruit when it turns yellow-orange, then allow it to ripen at room temperature for 3–10 days. Ripe fruit should be soft but not mushy. Canistel typically fruits from December through March in subtropical climates, though some cultivars can produce fruit year-round. Outdoors, it is suited to Zones 9–11 with frost protection; in colder climates, it can be grown on a patio or in a greenhouse in Zone 4 and above.

Very good Bruce Canistel from Sow Exotic

The plant is tall and healthy, I ordered it in chilling month of Jan, left outdoor under the shade when some night temperature went down to 36 degrees, no problem. I will plant it in the ground in March, and may buy another variety (from Sow Exotic of course) to have cross pollination for higher fruit yield.
