Compact, High-Yielding Tropical Fruit Tree

Common Names: Dwarf Red Lady Papaya
Family: Caricaceae
Origin: Central America, Southeast Asia (Hybrid Variety)

The Papaya 'Dwarf Red Lady' (Carica papaya) is a popular compact variety known for its high fruit production, sweet red-orange flesh, and ability to thrive in smaller spaces. Unlike standard papaya trees, the Dwarf Red Lady stays relatively small, reaching only 6-8 feet in height, making it ideal for home gardeners and patio containers. This fast-growing tropical fruit tree produces fruit year-round in optimal conditions, and it begins bearing fruit as early as 7-9 months after planting. Its delicious, sweet fruit is perfect for fresh eating, smoothies, salads, or tropical desserts.

Distinctive Features, Uses, and Nutritional Value

Fruits: The Dwarf Red Lady Papaya produces medium to large, oval-shaped fruits with thin, yellow-green skin and vibrant red-orange flesh. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and packed with flavor, making it perfect for fresh eating, juicing, or adding to smoothies and tropical desserts. The fruit is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as digestive enzymes like papain, which support digestive health.

Foliage: The tree has large, lobed, palmate leaves that give it a lush, tropical appearance. These broad leaves create an attractive canopy, adding ornamental value to any garden.

Growth Habit: Dwarf Red Lady Papaya is a fast-growing, self-pollinating, and compact fruit tree that typically reaches 6-8 feet tall. Its manageable size makes it perfect for growing in smaller spaces, including patios, containers, or gardens.

Culinary and Medicinal Uses

Dwarf Red Lady Papaya fruit is enjoyed fresh, added to fruit salads, blended into smoothies, or used in tropical desserts. The fruit is known for its digestive benefits due to the enzyme papain, which aids digestion and reduces bloating. In traditional medicine, papaya is also used to treat skin conditions and improve immune health. The seeds of the papaya, which have a slightly peppery flavor, are sometimes dried and used as a spice or natural remedy for digestive health.

    Mr. Variety (8 week update)

This papaya tree is absolutely amazing. See the photo. It's height has tripled and its leaves extend over 4 feet. The trunk diameter has grown from skinny to 2 inches. We planted it just 8 weeks ago. It appears to have 8 pods near the top that I anticipate will turn into flowers soon. Unexpected, we may get some fruit this year! This is truly exciting!

The plant arrived in perfect condition. The packaging provides great protection. It is happily growing in my yard, along with a variety of citrus and fig trees.

Last time I bought some small papaya plants, I paid $10 for a 4 foot plant. I assumed these Medium plants would at least be a couple feet tall, as are other medium fruit bearing plants from other sellers.

Instead I received these 3 inch tall, sad, partially uprooted plants for $20 each plus shipping. What a rip off.

    Cute little plant.

The papaya was just as described, ie, small but healthy. After receiving it, I promptly transplanted it. It was delicate, so I placed it in a partially shaded area among some other trees that I have. At the present....all is well.
