Tilo (Justicia pectoralis), also known as Piri Piri and Willow Herb, is a perennial trailing or climbing herb native to Mexico, Central America, and South America. A member of the Acanthaceae family, it features lance-shaped leaves and delicate flowers in shades of white, pink, lavender, blue, and purple that appear in loose clusters at the ends of its branches. Tilo is commonly found along roadsides in its native range and is also grown as an ornamental flowering plant in the Caribbean, where it has naturalized.
Its aromatic dried foliage contains coumarin and has a long history of traditional use. Indigenous peoples have brewed the fragrant leaves into tea and tonic preparations traditionally associated with digestive issues, coughs, and colds, as well as ceremonial preparations. Growing Tips
Plant Tilo in part shade to full shade and provide rich, moist soil with good drainage. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types and can tolerate poorer soils, but avoid allowing the plant to sit in consistently soggy conditions. Keep the soil moist with frequent watering during active growth. Tilo can reach up to 3 ft. and grows well in containers when planted in rich potting soil with a drainage hole. It is frost sensitive and is best suited to Zones 9–11, while containers can be grown in a patio or greenhouse in colder climates. Tilo is also relatively pest resistant and can be harvested year-round.
